Lingayats or Veera Shaivas are a large caste of Shiva worshippers who became more prominent after a reform movement ascribed to Basavanna in the 12th century. Lingayats are Karnataka's largest community, comprising about 27 per cent of the state's population. They are also found in parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Gujarat. Lingayats are active in the field of social work, particularly in education and medicine.
