The term 'Vokkaliga' means, 'the person who tills the land'. It is taken from the Kannada word Vokkalathana which means tilling land. The agricultural community of south Karnataka belonged to the Morasu Vokkalu sect, whose ancestors were migrants from Morasunadu near Kanjeepuram. Vokkaligas once known for their successful agricultural activities now have diversified into animal husbandry, soldiery and politics. Vokkaligas are spread across the south Karnataka districts of Bangalore, Kolar, Mandya, Mysore, Hassan and Chikmagalur.
